How to buy baby shower gifts when the baby's gender is not known

Shopping for baby shower gifts is so much fun! There are so many things to choose from: baby shower gifts ranging from practical to extravagant and from simple to plain cute.
One question that often arises is:
How do you buy baby shower gifts when the baby's gender is not known?
I can't help but laugh a little when I hear that question. You see, back in Aunt Abby's child-bearing years, we never knew the gender of the baby until it was born.
Sometimes baby shower hostesses would wait until after the baby was born to have a baby shower so baby shower gifts would be gender appropriate, but most of the time the baby shower was held before the birth so baby shower gifts could help the new parents be prepared.
Fun Fact: Ultrasounds or sonograms that are used as diagnostic tools in pregnancy and to find out the baby's gender originated from sonar technology that was originally used in the early 1800s to measure distance under water by using sound waves.
No, Aunt Abby is not THAT old! Research into the use of sonograms in medical diagnosis started in the 1940s and in the late 1980s to early 1990s imaging quality was greatly improved.
These days, doctors can tell expectant mothers what gender their baby will be before it is even born, but some parents still opt to be surprised which makes choosing baby shower gifts a little more difficult. But believe me, it can be done.
When buying a baby shower gift without knowing if the baby is a boy or a girl, you can do one of two things.
1. Get baby shower gifts that are not gender specific such as practical, useful things or baby clothes and accessories that are neutral in color and don't have boy/girl specific features.
2. Get baby shower gifts that are gender specific and save your receipt so the items can be returned and exchanged if necessary.
When the gender of the baby is not known, it is loads of fun for the expectant mom to open baby shower gifts for both boys and girls. It actually adds to the excitement and anticipation.
As long as the baby shower gifts can be exchanged, it isn't a big deal whether or not you know the gender of the baby.
